Garay wicker and woven straw handbags were a staple of mid-century fashion. Produced by Garay & Co.—a New York-based handbag company founded in 1937—these bags were hugely popular during the 1950s and 1960s.
Famous for combining natural materials with high-end structured designs, vintage Garay bags remain highly collectible fashion accessories today.
The company quickly made a name for itself by producing stylish, high-quality, and fashion-forward women’s accessories.
The Mid-Century Boom (1950s–1960s): During the 1950s, women’s fashion shifted heavily toward matching accessories. Garay capitalized on this by creating intricately woven raffia, wicker, and straw purses, many of which were made in Japan.
Their 1960s collections often featured woven or rattan basket bodies paired with playful details like floral embellishments, colourful linings, and ornate kiss-lock clasps. The company remained a prominent manufacturer for decades, with operations officially concluding around April 1982
